Greetings Alabeemers,
I hope you will join us for our June 2nd Saturday RTE to Shells Downtown Bar and Grille in Piedmont Alabama, June 13, 2020. We will depart from Edgar's Bakery at the Colonnade, stands up at 8:30am, with a full tank and an empty bladder. Thanks to Dave Smith for recommending one of his favorite eateries for us to enjoy.
Along the way, we will ride over Double Oak Mountain on Hwy 25 and other back roads to the Janney Iron Furnace and Calhoun County Confederate Memorial in Ohatchee, Alabama and then continue to Shells Downtown in Piedmont for lunch.
The total distance to Shell's Downtown is 98 miles and about a 3 hour trip. After lunch, on the way back to the Birmingham area, we will ride the ultra curvy, fun Cottaquilla Road NE of Anniston, AL. Total distance 94 miles and 1:45 minutes, arriving back in Birmingham around 3 pm.
Here is information about the Janney Iron Furnace and Confederate Memorial copied from our ABEES Touring Guide:
"Janney Iron Furnace is located in one of the most beautiful areas of Alabama. Rich in history, Janney Iron Furnace is listed with the National Park Service's National Registry of Historic Places and is on the tour of the Civil War Preservation. Adjacent to the old Iron Furnace is the Calhoun County Confederate Memorial which is the world's largest black granite Confederate monument and the largest confederate memorial in the State of Alabama. Carved on the 110 foot memorial are the names of all of Calhoun County's citizens who served the Confederacy during the War for "Southern Independence". More men from Calhoun County died during the War than the State of Alabama's total combined war dead of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Janney Furnace Park is a park surrounding a fifty-foot tall stone furnace in Ohatchee, Alabama. The furnace was built in 1863 by Alfred Janney to produce pig iron due to the prevalence of iron ore in what is now the park. A July 1864 Union raid destroyed all but the stone chimney, which still remains."
